Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi called for combined security forces to take control of the war-torn Kurdistan region at a press conference in Baghdad on Tuesday, declaring intentions to "protect all citizens and the Kurds". Al-Abadi called on "Kurdish Peshmerga forces to participate in the extension of security on the disputed areas", adding that claims of Iraqi forces killing Kurdish citizens are "false rumours". China and Iraq pledged to establish a long-term, stable energy partnership with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on oil and gas that they signed on Tuesday. The University of Cincinnati is one of only a handful of American universities to be selected for an international partnership to rebuild Iraq's educational system and its economy. Video project – Act collectively: Together with its partners the global Food Security Cluster and the German Federal Foreign Office Welthungerhilfe started off a video project to raise awareness for the importance of partnership and coordination. The organisations interviewed national and international partners in Bangladesh, Iraq and Mali. Despite different contexts, the partners had similar experience and pointed out the importance of involving local actors in humanitarian coordination, as they do better understand the needs and aspirations of the affected communities.

AMMAN, Jordan, 20 October 2008 The Nokia mobile communications company and UNICEF have launched a unique public-private partnership for children in Iraq to rebuild eight primary schools affected by conflict, displacement and poverty. The $1 million initiative is operating in two of the poorest areas in southern Iraq and the northern Kurdish region with the goal of creating safe, stimulating school environments in which children can receive a quality education.
